Privacy Policy

Last updated September 6, 2026. LocalEditor keeps your files on your Mac. It uses a small online account only for login, trials, licences, purchase recovery, and registered-Mac management.

Your files stay local

LocalEditor never uploads, syncs, or transmits the contents of your notes or files anywhere. Everything you write stays on your own disk, in your own folders. No sync, ever — that's a permanent principle of how LocalEditor is built, not a feature we might add later.

Your LocalEditor account

An account exists only to identify you for a trial or licence, recover a purchase, and manage the Macs registered to that licence. LocalEditor does not use your account for file storage, content sync, advertising, or content analytics.

Clerk provides authentication and stores your login identity. You can log in with a verified email code or through Google, Apple, or GitHub. A social provider gives Clerk the basic profile information needed to create and identify your account — normally your name, verified email address, and profile image or username, depending on the provider and what you choose to share. Apple may provide a private relay address when you use Hide My Email. LocalEditor uses this information only to authenticate you and show which account is active.

LocalEditor does not request access to Google Drive, Gmail, contacts, or calendars; GitHub repositories, source code, or organisations; or iCloud Drive, photos, contacts, or other Apple content. It does not retrieve or use a social provider's OAuth access token after login. See Clerk's Privacy Policy, Google's Privacy Policy, Apple's Privacy Policy, and GitHub's Privacy Statement.

The licensing service fetches your name, primary email address, and profile image from Clerk when needed but does not store them in its Cloudflare database. The desktop app caches that small profile while you are logged in so it can remain visible during a temporary network interruption, then removes it when you log out or deactivate the Mac.

Licensing data

LocalEditor's licensing service runs on Cloudflare. It stores an opaque Clerk user ID; trial and licence dates and status; registered-Mac labels and platform; a hash of each device credential; Dodo purchase and licence identifiers; a one-way keyed fingerprint of the licence key; short-lived login handoff hashes; checkout intents; and minimal, redacted security events used to diagnose login and licence problems.

It never stores raw licence keys, Clerk session tokens, device secrets, file paths, or document contents. The private device credential stays in the Mac's Keychain. See Cloudflare's Privacy Policy for how Cloudflare handles service data.

Account deletion & retained records

You can permanently delete your account from LocalEditor Settings. This deletes your Clerk identity and removes its registered Macs, trial, login handoffs, checkout intents, and profile-linked licensing records. It does not delete any files on your Mac. Deleting an account does not refund or invalidate a purchase.

To prevent repeated trials after account recreation, LocalEditor retains the original trial dates together with purpose-separated, server-keyed hashes derived from verified email addresses and the deleted Clerk identity. Raw email addresses are not retained in this database. Paid purchase metadata, including Dodo identifiers, the licence-key fingerprint, and licence validity, is retained under an opaque deleted-owner record so support can relink a purchase after verifying ownership. Completed deletion requests retain only a receipt hash, the opaque purchase-owner reference, and timestamps.

These limited records are kept for as long as needed to prevent repeat trials, recover purchases, enforce licence terms, resolve security or support issues, and meet legal obligations. Purchase recovery is handled by support and never happens automatically from an email-address match.

Purchases

When you buy LocalEditor, Dodo Payments handles checkout as the merchant of record. LocalEditor does not receive or store your full payment-card details. Dodo sends the identifiers and licence status needed to fulfil and maintain your purchase. Your billing information is processed under Dodo's Privacy Policy and Buyer Terms.

The former Beta waitlist

Before direct downloads became available, LocalEditor used a form built on Tally to collect names, email addresses, and answers to a pricing-sensitivity question. These responses are retained only to manage earlier Beta interest and understand what people are willing to pay. No waitlist signup is now required to download LocalEditor. See Tally's Privacy Policy.

Cookies, logs & analytics

LocalEditor does not use advertising pixels or behavioural analytics. Clerk uses essential browser storage and cookies on the account and login pages to keep authentication secure. Cloudflare hosts the website and licensing service and may process standard request information, such as IP address, browser details, and security logs, to deliver and protect them.

How data is shared

LocalEditor does not sell personal data. Information is shared only with the services needed for the purposes above: Clerk for authentication, Cloudflare for hosting and licensing, Dodo Payments for purchases and licence validity, and Tally for records from the former Beta waitlist. Information may also be disclosed when required by law or to protect users and the service.

Your choices & contact

You can review your account and registered Macs in LocalEditor Settings, delete your account there, or email publicnikhilwork@gmail.com to request access, correction, deletion, or purchase-recovery help. This policy may change as LocalEditor grows; the date above always reflects the latest version.
